Clean cut acoustic you’d take home to mum.
Casey Barnes writes Pete Murray-style acoustic pop songs. That, essentially, sums it up, and while the music isn’t bad per se, it is, at times, a trifle by-the-numbers. His voice, at falsetto, has an R&B quality that explains the success of his remixes on the dance floor. Nevertheless, the entire EP reeks of safe choices. Red Lion Motel is the sort of acoustic album you would give to your mum at Mother’s Day and it is, perhaps, within this clean-cut market that Barnes will find success having already supported the likes of Bryan Adams and Vanessa Amorosi. He muses about unrequited love, but you never really empathise with the protagonist in his tales. The Crossing is a standout track, bringing a slight Americana flavour to the EP and Everyday incorporates punchy vocal harmonies and a quick-step rhythm to produce the most pop friendly track of Barnes’ songs. Nonetheless these moments don’t really sway me enough to label this an impressive release, but there is an indication of better things to come.

1. Written by TL, on 17-02-2009 06:46 I think Red Lion Motel is fantastic... not boring in the slightest...! I can't actually pick a favourite off this album, they are all great. I wish Casey all the best and "clean cut acoustic you'd take home to mum"...not sure what would be too wrong with that. There is a market for Casey Barnes and I think he is capturing their attention in a great way. Sure he's not smashing guitars and abusing media, but haven't we got enough of those show-offs...!!?? |

"I Promise" from his new EP really hits home & takes me to a great place. With all that is going on in the world at the moment, it's great to listen to some light hearted 'clean cut',feel good tunes! I'm sure we havn't seen the best of Casey Barnes yet!!! |
