World electronica from the shore of Papua New Guinea.
Gerald Valilio, originally from Papua New Guinea, journeyed back to his musical roots around 2007 where he began to record the songs and sounds of the West and South coast regions of the islands. The original project grew into an album of sparse organic soundscapes and traditional songwriting melded with modern grooves. Although this is world music, it is dressed in danceable rhythms and tribal electronica that evokes the work of Robert Miles and Enigma. The Welcoming and Mu Saspack have Gregorian chanted vocals while Laire and Timulmul utilise the quarter tones of traditional female vocalists from the South. While world music often feels inaccessible, Lomtengen manages to transcend these constraints and be sonically diverse enough to remain relevant. Although it isn’t going to sit in the CD player for repeated plays, it does make for some unique listening.
