The Step Inn - Sun Feb 15
We’re going to run out of time if I
bother with the supports, and frankly, there’s no need to hover
over the entrée if the main meal provides every flavour…
which it does. There are a slew of talented DJs who can thrown down a
nightclub set; Kid Koala happily deals out the M.I.A. and
Jay-Z but doesn’t restrict his list, dropping Deltron 3030’s
Positive Contact and getting Moon River over and done with within the
first half hour before friendly forays into pitch-shifting and
melody-making over three decks. The rock and pop dance alongside jazz
and turntablism, and the set ends with a mindfuckingly beautiful
slowdive of My Bloody Valentine mixed over the Two Lone Swordsmen’s
Driving With My Gears In Reverse… There is entertainment, there is
a live thumb-wrestle and a point where he dives into the crowd, but
the main event is his hands, projected vertical, showing us how the
friendliest DJ in the world works. He rubs, rather than scratches. He
taps deftly and coaxes music from the groove, playing records like a
piano. At the encore, he does all of the above and shows how those
sounds on Trouser Jazz are made. It’s awesome, and friendly, and we
hope he’s back soon.
