Concert and doco of former Beach Boy’s latest opus

For some, That Lucky Old Sun was something of a limp anticlimax after the commercial and creative triumph that was Brian Wilson’s unveiling of his long-dormant psychedelic pop symphony Smile. Listened to on its own merits, though, TLOS is an affectionate, nostalgic and often moving look back to the LA of Wilson’s youth. Although it has its moments of dark autobiography, the collection of songs ultimately feels like a soft Californian sunset. The main attraction on this DVD is, oddly, the weakest one: a live performance of the new album in May 2008 at Capitol Studio A (where Wilson helmed many a Beach Boys session). Wilson’s famous excesses and mental problems have long been physically apparent, but he looks particularly grim in this film and his often-wavering vocals hit bum notes a trifle more than is comfortable. But he is also smart enough to bring the full band along, complete with strings and horns. The spot-on performances of their employer’s lush compositions ultimately remind you that, despite his issues, Wilson is still a masterful producer and arranger. Set highlights Going Home, Midnight’s Another Day and Southern California can stand proudly alongside some of Wilson’s greatest achievements. The accompanying documentary is a heartfelt and entertaining look at Wilson behind-the-scenes creating his latest musical statement, but some of the real treats can be found in the extras. A brief set for Yahoo! Music has both Wilson and band sounding wonderful, while a quick chat between Brian and Zooey Deschanel doesn’t reveal a great deal but is very sweet. Most fun of all, however, is Wilson and bandmates harmonising in the back of a cab accompanied by a Casiotone keyboard. For the BW/BB enthusiast, there’s plenty to savour.
