Occasional Devo, Ween, A Perfect Circle and NIN drummer Josh Freese (pictured) is taking the Radiohead model of direct album sales to its extreme with a series of progressively more absurd packages for his new record, Since 1972. For example, for US$50 you can get a version that comes with a t-shirt and a five-minute thank-you phone call. For US$500 you get a signed CD, t-shirt, cymbal, and Freese will join you for a dip in a sensory-deprivation tank and dinner at Sizzler. Heck, for US$10,000 he’ll throw in his car. Perhaps the best one-off deal is the US$20,000 package, which includes 18 holes of miniature golf with Freese, Tool’s Maynard James Keenan and Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh. It also comes with a personal tour of Long Beach, California, two songs “written about you” and a selection of items from Freese’s closet. There are even more offers, but you get the picture. In response to a few sceptics on the internet, Freese has responded with “It is very much real and I am surely not joking. Buy one and see for yourself...” Indeed, visit www.joshfreese.com to see what package you might like to pick up when they become available on Mar 24.
