Babes In Bands: Style On The Street

In the precious last days of winter, TESS CURRAN talks style loves ‘n’ hates with some of Brisbane’s favourite indie frontwomen.

CARRY NATION

Likes: teacups and saucers, big hats, old paintings of sailboats, crooked teeth, ribbons, aeroplane earrings, Sera Deasy.

Dislikes: near-naked outfits in winter, people who wear glasses’ frames without the lenses.

One trend I’d like to bring back: Victorian era dress ware (e.g. Pride And Prejudice)

Thoughts on Brisbane Style: We’re getting there...

DO THE ROBOT

Likes: Amsterdam street markets, patterned tights, berets, vintage kitchen chairs, Charles and Ray Eames, snowglobes.

Dislikes: people who don’t wear clothes to suit their shape, people who wear high heels without learning how to walk in them, LV monogrammed bags

Thoughts on Brisbane Style: I see a lot of people with really interesting style with vintage school values, but I think too many Brisbanites place too much emphasis on expensive brands and trends over timelessness. Style to me also encompasses the manner and character in which you express and present yourself – I think a lot of people forget this and fall flat.

THE RATIONAL ACADEMY

www.myspace.com/therationalacademy

Likes: handmade lace, vintage brooches, red lipstick, quilters cotton, quality craftsmanship, retro chic, Art Deco.

Dislikes: runs in stockings, any form or variation of the poncho, thongs (as in shoes), maxi-dresses, knee-high stripey socks, novelty underwear, girls who do not dress for the weather, boys who dress to impress girls who don’t dress for the weather.

One trend I’d like to bring back: gloves and hats (not fascinators) ... or crimped hair.

Thoughts on Brisbane style: I think Brisbane has a more laid back approach to style. There’s not a huge obsession with couture (which can be a good or bad thing). The other day as I was walking to uni I passed a Cotton On store – I saw the mannequin in the window, and kept walking. When I arrived to my class I noticed one of the girls had bought item for item (including accessories) the exact same outfit that this mannequin was dressed in. It made me a little sad to think that many people put so little creativity or individuality into how they present themselves. In a way it imitates the pre-‘60s individualism revolution in its 1950s approach to department store convenience in an environment of increased consumerism (think Queen Street Mall on a Friday night). However, in saying that, I know so many lovely stylish people, all of whom have a great eye for finding pieces from all over the place that speak to them and serve as little glimpses as to the fabulous people that they are.
