The Tivoli - Sun Apr 12

Emo is dead. The genre was once edgy and counter-cultural, now it’s passé and mainstream. Even with the buzz stripped from the genre, Mindless Self Indulgence do a good job of packing out The Tivoli on a Sunday. Newly formed rock outfit Kunst kick off the show tonight. With strong vocal melodies accompanied by memorable guitar riffs, the five-piece are reminiscent of Powderfinger when they still had alt-rock credibility. Art rock with an equal focus on guitar chords and stage props, next The Red Paintings win over all the funny-haired little’uns in The Tivoli tonight with tracks like Mad World. When vocalist Jimmy Urine introduces his band by saying, “you have all caught a sexually transmitted disease called Mindless Self Indulgence”, the cheers are uproarious.  To clarify kids, VD’s not cool. It’s almost laughable to see MSI, a band of fully-grown adults, act like a bunch of horny 14 year-olds. Trouncing about the stage like kids throwing a hissy fit over an allowance dispute, the band’s music is as mature as their stage presence. Shamelessly genre-mashing, the band only succeed in producing an atonal bleating. It’s rap without lyricism, rock without any discernable guitar riffs and dance music for people who aren’t old enough to go to clubs where dance music is played. Tonight’s crowd loves Mindless Self Indulgence, but in no way does that validate the band’s totally irrelevant existence. Teeming with a pubescent sexual energy, MSI are as cringe-worthy as your high school romantic pursuits. This is a shallow and insipid performance from a horrendously sub-par band. In a few years, most of tonight’s audience who loved the show will shake their heads at the memory of their attendance. MSI are simply the Bloodhound Gang minus intelligent innuendo, irony and charm. Emo is dead, tonight MSI demonstrate why.

...and MSI were horrible,vacuous music for spoilt brats.Red Paintings were OK and Kunst were good . Does it show massive disrespect to the supports though, by giving them criminally short sets only to see the stage sit empty for half an hour before MSI?. So much attention seeking showbiz bullshit,so little substance.

You're all mad! MSI were brilliant, yes they were slightly sell-out-ish and bratty, but that's their schtick, let them take the cake home. They played a short set, one hour was decent enough. I went to the Msi show in Melbourne last year and they played a 1.5 hour set, I was satisfied. Even though I was left disappointed from this gig, at least I got to see them in the buff.

The only reason their were so many emos there was because Lyn-z's hubby is King of Emo, Gerard Gay.

How dare you insult MSI of being emo? Wtf? Are you kidding me? They were far more original than "Kunst". A pathetic waste of a band, as you could tell by the booing of the audience, they were horrible and unoriginal, the lead singer had no panache and no credibility whatsoever. Whereas MSI have been playing for over a decade, have toured with major bands and have sold-out most gigs they've ever played.

This review is shit.

FINALLY someone with a brain what a miracle lol, emos gather anywhere at anything its just what they do doesnt mean the band is emo, MSI are great crazy stupid idiots that you cant help but love, at least they have the balls to be different.

That was Kunst's first ever gig and from what I heard played a really good tight set, so cut them some slack.

ha im wearing my msi shirt form that show right now.
Kunst's lead singer said at the start of their set;
'i dunno who's more excited to see msi, us or you'
that kinds lost them some respect from the crowd cause it was so corny, but they weren't that bad when you consider they are still trying to make it.
The red paintings were epic, as per usual. i really like their style because it's new, its not emo and its not pop and its not rap and they seem to be the only 3 genre's these days that get interest so they, like msi, are awesome because they dont fit into those three categories. The red paintings also always have a really good live show and so do msi. i think this review is stupid because at least they are trying to be different, so what they have some toilet humor in their songs or their stage antics but who cares, it makes it light and fun. their music is catchy and flooded with bass and boom and the lead singer can always entertain.
