(Lempicka)
East meets west in a powerfully adept debut
Recorded in both Brisbane and in Singapore in August of last year, Honesty is the first release for Singaporean artist Ling Kai on national indie label Lempicka. Featuring six songs of contrasting styles, moods and tones, the EP is a great demonstration of maturity and restraint by the twenty-two year old singer-songwriter. The cheesily-named opener, Facebook Photograph, has no cliché about it, rather a heartbroken, dejected mood driven by a chorus full of pain. Suburbia has a swing-like feel and a lot of sharp, punchy vocals. Overall, Ling Kai’s ear for melody is marvellous and her composition and arranging demure and subtle. Not only is Honesty a flaming torch for the independent Singapore music scene, but it is also the showcase of an artist that promises greater things.
