Local hip hop emcee and producer CASTEL who launches his EP this week, spends five minuets with RAVE to answer some questions.
So what was your favourite colour Faber-Castell pencil when drawing?
Yellow, I’d always draw the sun in my pictures as a kid. Pay homage to the creator of vitamin D and everything you see.
Who have you worked with in a production capacity?
Pretty much the people I got to feature on Stories From The Bridge, Clay-Tone (who plays live with me), Callum Galloway (The Brave), Neha Kent (Parlourvice). I’m also doing a track with Youka Snell (Grassroots Street Orchestra) and also finished one for Robzie (GSO).
Is it more challenging producing yourself, as opposed to another artist?
In the sense that I got to hit record, run into the booth, spit a verse, run out and hit stop. Gets pretty annoying, but I guess that has given me time to discover how to use my voice without someone behind the desk getting agitated. Sometimes I record a verse 10 times before I’m happy with it. I’m constantly thinking of song structure and production ideas, so that’s challenging cause my mind never rests.
How did your Stories From The Bridge release come together?
Funny story, in 2007 I almost quit music because I had spent so much money, time and effort trying to make hip hop beats and create my own style and didn’t think I was getting anywhere. I was tripping in my head really badly in my last year of Sound Design (QUT), then I got a phone call saying I was Coca Cola’s Live n Local unsigned artist for QLD in 2007. A song that’s on the EP (All New Light) got their attention. The track was a bit rough though, so I spent 2008 enhancing my production skills and learning to get my mixes tighter. Stories From The Bridge (2009) is the result from a lot of hard work in the studio combining sampled material with played instruments. It’s like Dilla mixed with Hi-Tek and Madlib.
What is the idea behind – and who is responsible for – the Funk n Soul’d Out night?
Rupert Faust (Scripted Dialects) and Sian Evans have got a deal going with The Globe. The last Sunday of every month Funk’n Soul’d Out are holding an afternoon of music showcasing emerging and established artists. It’s a great opportunity for people to check out local music on the rise. The Castel EP Launch is mainly a hip hop gig this month.
How well do you think the line-up represents local talent?
I think it represents emerging local groups well. Everyone’s working on getting their recordings released. I think Truth Serum’s recording an album and Scripted Dialects are going to release their first EP soon. So yeah, we’re all trying to make a footprint in the Bris scene.
