The Hi-FI - Thu Jun 18
Between the PETA stand and the fact hardly anyone is drinking, it’s a bit quiet with the crowd as The Hi-Fi opens its doors. But not from Against – the local outfit gives the place a good drilling first up.
Kiwi hardcore quintet Antagonist AD are up next and give the audience something to think about with Samsam’s direct lyrics over Misery, Stranger and Show Some Heart – which is sufficient without the preaching and Earth Crisis-grovelling in between songs, thanks.
Adelaide ballers Day Of Contempt are on their farewell tour and Ben Coyte puts all he has into it for the ‘old dogs,’ but he looks stuffed while doing it. Apart from not appearing too energetic, the rest of the band is pretty faultless, putting in a memorable version of From The Inside for the few serious fans hanging on every note up front.
With near-hardline beliefs, New York’s Earth Crisis are out there even for hardcore, but I still wonder with their clothing. Decked out in the ‘Suicidal Tendencies tryouts’ outfits, the bandanna-clad dudes kick the energy up like they’re on several cups of coffee, except being a vegan straight-edge band, you know they aren’t. Their new record gets a fair go, with the tortured Against The Current getting wild approval even from those at the back of the room. And the band seems satisfied with the show, so it’s a win-win in my books.
