Ric’s Bar - Thu Jun 18
Is it possible that tonight’s incarnation of Melbourne’s The Zebras (peeled back to Jeremy Cole, Max Dugan and sometime member Greg Brady helping out on bass) is even more charming than when they have a few extra members? Probably not, given that much of the band’s allure came from the interplay between the five or so members previously calling Brisbane home, but The Zebras Lite still pack a fair punch when it comes to bright and bouncy indie pop. Local man about town Nick Norton also gets behind the kit on a few occasions, further aiding interstate band relations. Norway to Australia is a hell of a long way to travel, especially to perform at a venue with no cover charge, but Je Suis Animal don’t let the cramped quarters – guitarist Anthony Barratt spends the performance offstage – get in the way of their sweet and jangly songs. Occasionally the sound de-evolves into a clashing dirge of drums, but more often than not it’s sweet and shiny pop like The Mystery Of Marie Roget. As most songs barely travel further than the four-minute mark, it’s a set of short and sharp songs perfect for dancing away the looming chills.
