MADELENE RYAN catches up with singer and guitarist JIMMY SKY to uncover developments in the world of dark melodic rockers FLOWERS FOR LILY.
Hard-edged Gold Coast four-piece Flowers For Lily made their festival debut at Big Day Out this year on the back of their well-received 2008 EP A Day Will Come. Releasing a digital-only EP in July – Live at Studio 55 – the band are reportedly already well underway on their full-length debut.
MADELENE RYAN: You and Yaan Dalzell came from A Name To Come’s split in 2008. What inspired Flowers For Lily’s formation?
JIMMY SKY: I started writing funerary-style acoustic songs under the title of Flowers For Lily as a farewell to the deceased band. Yaan loved it and jumped on board. He influenced the move back to the dark rock sound of the old band. Greg Cameron, (guitar) and later Bryan Macaranas (drums) joined, creating a rejuvenated sound.
MR: You’ll be supporting Sydonia and Mushroom Giant when they come to Surfers Paradise. How did you hook that up?
JS: That’s a secret – just kidding. I’ve been a fan of Sydonia for a long time, I think they’re amazing, and highly underrated. Apparently Jesse Dracman of Devilution and Sydonia themselves asked us to do the show. I’m not sure of the details. Networking always helps.
MR: What would be Flowers For Lily’s dream gig?
JS: Wembley Stadium, or some kind of festival, and sharing a stage with Muse, the Foo Fighters, HIM, and Placebo.
MR: Your live EP will be released digitally soon. In terms of ideal music formats, personally do the band prefer MP3 or CDs (or even vinyl)?
JS: I like vinyl best, but it’s too expensive nowadays. MP3 is great because it’s so compact and everyone’s into it at the moment – but I listen to CD’s more often than not, because that’s what my car stereo likes to eat.
MR: So, what can we next expect from the Flowers For Lily camp?
JS: Let’s just say we’re releasing this EP in the interim to keep people happy – we’re planning a couple of big things, but we can’t give away any details because that would spoil the surprise.
FLOWERS FOR LILY play the Miami Shark Bar on Saturday Jul 4 with They Are Spies, Azrael and The Black Walls; followed by a support for Sydonia and Mushroom Giant at the Surfers Paradise Hard Rock Café on Friday Jul 10. LIVE AT STUDIO 55 will be available through iTunes in July. www.myspace.com/flowers4lily
