Further selections from the world’s finest indie dance label
Kitsuné’s releases always attempt to fuse the charming raggedness of indie guitar music with the drive and sleekness of house and electro, and this compilation, the seventh in their Maison series, is their most solid and satisfying attempt thus far. Two Door Cinema Club’s loose, carefree track Something Good Can Work opens the set; with its chiming guitars and sweetly-frantic vocals, it comes on like a cross between Vampire Weekend and early Phoenix. Phoenix themselves show up two tracks later, remixed by Classixx, who give the bouncy Lisztomania a slow, dubbed-out disco makeover. There are a few very big names here – Yuksek’s offers a pummelling, vocoded take on Autokratz’s Always More, while Lifelike deliver a hands-in-the-air remix of La Roux’s huge hit In For The Kill – but generally speaking, it’s the lesser-known artists who steal the show. With its breathy vocals and drugged-out hipster disco beats, The Golden Filter’s Favourite Things makes candy, lollies, kitties and bunnies sound decidedly sinister. Miss Mars, by newcomers 80kidz, is star-gazing electro house track, while Fringe Element, by Former Riot In Belgium man Beni, is a flashback to the more eccentric French house singles of the late ‘90s. Heartsrevolution’s untitled track is a lullaby for machines, and Chateau Marmont’s Beagle is an Italian horror movie flashback. Kitsuné Maison 7 provides great fodder for mix tapes, DJ sets, or just dancing around in a disorderly fashion, and comes highly recommended.
