(Tru Thoughts/Fuse)
Debut album for British experimenters
Stonephace is made up of octopoid jazz multi-instrumentalist Larry Stabbins and producer Krzysztof Oktalski with occasional guests you’re more likely to have heard of, like them from Portishead on guitar and bass. The product of their union is the kind of album that has abstract song titles like The Last Myth Of The Given and White Queen Psychology. Jazz, hey? Since producer Oktalski is a DJ you might expect some electro, maybe some hip hop beats, and there certainly are. Mostly though, this is instrumental psychedelic jazz. That’s not a flavour you’re going to see inserted between chocolate and vanilla at the ice cream shop any time soon, but it’s a nice taste anyway. Especial highlight is Levels And Degrees Of Light, which sounds like something from a James Bond movie if they ever make a James Bond movie where he trips balls for seven minutes forty.
