More magical than Dumbledore and Harry’s secret lovechild
Here We Go Magic is songwriter Luke Temple from Massachusetts, and as Here We Go Magic he does a very good job on seizing the lush electronic folk/pop aesthetic employed by bands like High Places and Au. The album has two particularly sensuous hooks; a miniature pop masterpiece in Fangela, and the captivatingly ethereal I Just Want To See You Underwater. This album is a notch above your average ‘pretty little indie record’, and the way Fangela’s chorus anchors to your brain is testament to that. This is an album of more than two tracks however and fortunately the other seven songs are also quite good. Tunnelvision and Ghost List are both gorgeous tracks and signify the shift in form of the record’s second half, becoming less about decisively poppy tracks and more about ambience and textures. Nat’s Alien really takes it to its sonic plateau but last track Everything’s Big is disappointingly clunky and unsuitable as a finale, a shuffling kind of ragtime ballad that sticks out like a sore thumb. Hit the stop button after track eight though and you’ll be fine; this is otherwise a strong record.
