RAVE spends a little bit of time with guitarist MATT NEWTON from local five-piece indie rockers STREAMER BENDY.

Please briefly introduce the members of Streamer Bendy, and tell us a little bit about how you came together…

Erinn sings and writes dirty words, Travis and I play guitar, Damon plays bass and Dane plays drums. We’ve all been friends for years and years. Dane and I started out playing in a punk band together in Hervey Bay almost 10 years ago now, then we all lived together in Brisbane. Erinn and I studied music at QUT together. So we all have a lot of history! Late last year we all had a long weekend off the road so we booked a holiday house down at Burleigh, packed some togs, vodka and guitars and wrote and recorded our first EP!  Which you can buy on iTunes now by the way...

How different is Streamer Bendy from Nina May and Repeat Offender, seeing as you have ex-members from both acts?

I don’t think its fair to even make comparisons between the three. Everyone in the band – all of us, have been touring for years, in many different groups and we all have vastly different musical tastes. It’s always fun to do something new and explore playing a type of music you haven’t really got to explore before. Nina May is a progressive metal pop rock thing. Repeat Offender was what it was. Damon also played in Emporium – who were a great punk pop band – and Travis and I are actually currently touring the world in a Queen tribute act ... so we’re quite happy to give anything a go! Streamer Bendy is just our dirty little pop secret.

Erinn’s vocals are quite striking – how much does her vocal sound drive songwriting for the band?

Erinn’s songwriting is the key to everything. She’s a genius with words. She’s almost always making fun of someone and there’s meaning in what she says, regardless of how flippant it sounds. It’s a real pleasure to pour some vodka in her and watch her do her thing.

If Streamer Bendy could share a stage with any three bands, who would they be?

Alive or dead? Both? Temper Trap, Dallas Crane and Nirvana. Or Genesis, Blondie and Matt & Kim.  Or Gallows, Juliette & The New Romantiques and Ladyhawk.   Who can pick just three? 

Are you working on a follow-up to the debut EP yet? Will we see an album or another EP this year or next?

We are definitely working on an album. Erinn and I spent a month travelling and writing songs earlier this year in Texas, New York, London and Sweden, and Erinn is just about to head back to Stockholm to keep working on album tracks. We’ve got a big pile of songs, but I’m sure there are more to come before we head into the studio.
