ImageSUCCESS WILL WRITE APOCALYPSE ACROSS THE SKY vocalist JOHN COLLETT waxes literary with TOM HERSEY as they discuss their debut album, William S. Burroughs, and uniting scene veterans to form the band.

Success Will Write Apocalypse Across The Sky obviously pay no heed to brevity. Between their band name and their debut album title, The Grand Partition And The Abrogation Of Idolatry, it’s clear the Floridian band is doing things on their own terms, no matter how much of a mouthful those terms may be.

Their infatuation with language seems to stem from a love of literature and a posturing similar to the brilliant, nihilistic work of junk-addled beat poet William S. Burroughs. Having derived their incredibly metalcore-sounding name from a Burroughs short story, the band has a vision unique in the extreme metal community. According to Collett, the band formed, “to awaken the masses, to help people realise they are in fact capable of making changes for the better of the community and the globe as a whole.”

Formed from the carcasses of underground acts like Bodies In The Gears Of The Apparatus, Dehumanized and Filth Porn, SWWAATS’ impressive pedigree has allowed them opportunities not generally presented to bands bursting onto the scene. The band signed to Nuclear Blast, which was something that took Collett and the rest of the six-piece act by surprise, “Nuclear Blast took our music and have shared what we believe in with the world, what more can we ask for? It’s been amazing; a great crew of people are on our side. As far as expectations go we don’t really have any. So when NB hit us up we were pretty shocked and pleasantly surprised. It’s been an amazing ride with those guys so far. It’s been awesome and a lot easier being that we’ve all been in the business at different levels for years. We knew how to put something really killer together.”

’Something killer’ is in no way an overstatement of the end result. The Grand Partition And The Abrogation Of Idolatry is the finest death grind album since Misery Index released Discordia in 2006. Amidst a flurry of blast beats, Success Will Write Apocalypse Across The Sky’s debut album sees guitar riffs both memorable and unfathomably brutal dominate tracks like 10,000 Sermons, 1 Solution and Despot.

The album is one of the strongest debuts from within the extreme metal community in a long time. Which in part is due to veteran producer James Murphy getting on board with the project. Having previously produced records for death metal legends like Obituary and Death, being signed to Nuclear Blast afforded SWWAATS the chance to work with a noted producer to record their debut album, an opportunity that vocalist John Collett feels was one of the most rewarding aspects of making the record. “It was great, a fantastic learning experience and working with James Murphy really helped to make this the album that we are super proud of.”

Out on the road in support of The Grand Partition into next year, Collett abandons the literary flourishes that have dominated our conversation when questioned about a possible Australian tour. “Goddamnit, I hope so! It’s been a dream of mine to travel down there.”
