The soundtrack of the seasons
Sunwrae are a musical ensemble led by Rae Howell who is the ensemble’s composer, pianist, vibraphone player and musical director. Written across seven years, each track is carefully composed to represent the cycle of the seasons. The title track opens with haunting strings and dissonant piano and evokes the urgency of change as demonstrated through autumn. With spring and summer (Poly and Drawn Down) comes the alto flute and it’s bird-like melody. The Machine takes the instrumental compositions into industrial territory and attempts to illustrate the city of Melbourne as a machine. This is an album of complex arrangements, subtle nuances and vibrant melodies that are straight from a Hans Zimmer or John Williams playbook. A call to young directors – this is definitely music to make a film to. Two parts classical to one part jazz, Autumn Never Fall tells an ever-changing story without a hint of pretension.
