Alt-rock-industrial-goth night Club Blink
turns one next week. TALIA SHIPMANN speaks to DYLAN MITROVICH of NUCLEUS, who
are set to play the club’s anniversary bash on Friday Aug 7.
Now incorporating Not Quite 299 at 293
Brunswick St (under the name My People) Club Blink has expanded over three
levels. Dylan Mitrovich, guitarist and percussionist for prog-rockers Nucleus
explains some of the finer points of celebrating a Blink milestone.
TALIA SHIPMANN: You’re travelling from
Sydney to play Brisbane Club Blink’s one year anniversary party – what gift are
you bringing for the celebration?
DYLAN MITROVICH: We will be bringing the
gift of progressive rock to the Brissie Blink folk, as well as the confidence
from many previous Blink anniversary parties in Sydney that this is going to be
one hell of a night! We have a special on our merchandise that night too – but
that’s a minor detail – it’s no longer Dry July and it’s time to party!
TS: Do you know much about your fellow
revellers, The Kidney Thieves and Yeo & The Fresh Goods?
DM: Umm, [I] haven’t heard Yeo & the
Fresh Goods yet, but have heard good things, we will need to suss out their
music shortly so we know what to expect! The Kidney Thieves are great, we’ve
played with them a number of times – including their first trip to Sydney just
a couple of weeks ago. They are great musicians, and top blokes – one of our
favourite Brisbane bands. Looking forward to hanging out with them on the
night, and talk their ears off with tour-van nonsense!
TS: Club Blink has been running for a
while down in Sydney, what has been your favourite memory from the club?
DM: Oh … it’s so hard to mention one
specific moment! We’ve been attending Club Blink in Sydney for almost nine of
the 10 years that it has been running down here, and it’s consistently a great
place to hang out, meet new people, see new bands and smash it on the dance
floor!
TS: Does Nucleus have any history with Brisbane, or is that a chapter
still to be written?
DM: Yes – we have performed at Brisbane a handful of times over the
last couple of years. Our first show in Brisbane in 2007 was actually with The
Kidney Thieves, and they also played the last show we did in Brisbane with them
earlier this year. We love Brisbane, and have always had a great response there
since our very first show. It became some kind of tradition that Nucleus
members get new tattoos on the Brisbane leg of the tour – and this time around
is not different! It’s a shame Brisbane is so far from Sydney, because we’d
truly like to be there more often!
