ImageSheffield DJ TODDLA T – who earned this nickname for being the youngest and pluckiest in his group of friends – exchanged emails with ALASDAIR DUNCAN on the eve of his latest release, a compilation for Fabric.

Toddla T is famous for his manic, genre-bending mash-ups of dancehall, reggae, drum & bass and UK garage; his forthcoming Fabric mix, which takes in everything from Duffy to Drums Of Death, pushes the boundaries even further.

ALASDAIR DUNCAN: I hear you’ve just been off to Jamaica?

TODDLA T: I’m doin’ this interview as we speak from the studio – it’s basically rented a studio with vocalists and musicians coming through. It’s the most amazing experience I’ve ever had in the studio.

AD: Your home town, Sheffield, has such a strong history of electronic music – what’s the scene like there at the moment?

TT: It’s wicked as ever, studios bosh out nothing but quality, no bollox – well, not within circles I know of. From the electro to bass line – all good. Parties here are pure vibes, heavy music and mixed-up crowds partying till 6am.

AD: Music in the UK can be quite regional – have you been winning people over outside Sheffield?

TT: Yeh proper – all over the world, people seem to be getting it, which I was most surprised about it as anyone.

AD: So how did you hook up with the crew from Fabric?

TT: Sinden initially booked me for his Get Familiar night, and then Shaun invited me back and eventually made me a resident. Fabric’s safe and hospitable and it’s always a WICKED gig.

AD: I’ve seen some mysterious girls called Da Donnaz on your MySpace – care to tell me a bit about them?

TT: Baby mommas innit ...

AD: I had a bit of a glance at your touring schedule and I can see that it’s pretty packed for the next few months – how are you liking being on the road?

TT: Yeh it’s wicked, meeting amazing people at the moment. I’m not really seeing the cities much, because I’m so busy it’s in and out – I can tell you about hotels though!

AD: Any chance you’ll be making it down to Australia in the next little while?

TT: DEFFO!!! SOON!!!

FABRIC LIVE 47, mixed by TODDLA T, is out on Fabric/Inertia in August. www.myspace.com/toddlat
