Hard-working Australian rockabilly band leader PAT
CAPOCCI gets in touch with TOM HERSEY to talk about his band’s
hectic travel itinerary and share a few of his favourite memories about
GreazeFest.
Pat Cappoci’s touring schedule is frantic. In the next few
months there isn’t a weekend when he won’t be out playing shows in a pub, RSL
or club. But rather than heading out on the road each time with the same band,
Pat has assembled a logistical headache waiting to happen, with separate bands
in both Queensland and New South Wales, and for each weekend jaunt he now
assembles a new line-up based on availability of his tight cohort of musicians.
“Nowadays the two line-ups have kinda combined into the one touring line-up, we
all have trouble with the ole day jobs trying to get time off and all, so it’s
just a matter of who is good to go at a certain time.”
Though Pat is unwilling to pick a favourite live line-up,
arguing, “all the fellas have the same attitude towards playing and just having
an awesome time”, he does concede that, “both line-ups bring totally different
aspects to the live show”. Seeming confident about the musicians that comprise
his backing band, our conversation focuses more on how Pat is excited to just
be heading out on tour and promoting the band’s most recent recordings.
“For the next few months we do have a fair bit of touring
planned, we’re planing to get our heads out there as much as we can to promote
the new record and we love playing live, so it’s great chance to get out there,
maybe even put away a few beers to!”
The new record Pat alludes to will see the band branch out
from their traditional rockabilly sound, largely at the behest of persistent
fans, who have been asking Pat for something a bit different.
“We classify ourselves as a rockabilly band, but on the
records we do branch out and do a bit of western swing, hillbilly, R&B and
country because we’ve grown up playing anything and pretty much everything, so
we’ve mixed it up to keep it interesting, but this time around we decided to
make one of the hard-edged, tougher sounding rockabilly records … A lot folks
were asking why we hadn’t done that yet, so we figured, ‘why the hell
not?’”
Pat seems genuinely enthused about the chance to once
again play GreazeFest, as much for the music as for the chance to hang out,
hopefully run into some old mates and experience the Kustom Kulture event. “For
sure we get into it at these types of events, and there’s no better place than
GreazeFest to do it. It attracts folks from all over the world, so you often
find yourself running into old mates, some of my favourite memories of
GreazeFest are just having a yarn and a few VBs with mates… and there are
always great new bands to check out. Playing wise we always try to give 110%,
so the only difference is this time we’re playing outside, a stage with a view,
pretty flash!”
PAT CAPOCCI appears at GREAZEFEST, a four day Kustom
Kulture event running from Thursday Jul 30 – Sunday Aug 2 at Souths Leagues
Club, West End. Entertainment includes a hot rod show, low brow art show, and
music from Checkered Fist and many more. For more info and tickets, head towww.greazefest.com.au.
