When one thinks of the Gold Coast, the boys from ELKE wouldn’t exactly be what springs to mind. But when you hear the rhythms that are driven as the pounding sea and the melodies that blaze as bright as the sun, the connection becomes all too clear. Formed from the ashes of Cardiff Giant and a link in the mighty chain that is The Delta Riggs, ELKE was designed as a response to what it’s four members wanted so badly to hear in the Gold Coast music scene. Zach (Vocals/Keys), Dave (Guitar/Keys), Joel (Drums), and James (Bass) write songs possessed of a classic pop sensibility, but with an independent flair that rises from the deepest realms of good taste. Coming off the back of a host of great supports for bands such as Datarock (Norway), Art Vs Science, Ratatat (USA), Grafton Primary, Lost Valentinos, and Van She, ELKE’s first release, “Blue Dream Lover”, is an absolute blazer. The five track EP is a self produced menagerie that encapsulates the breadth of diversity that can be found within ELKE’s deep and often brooding synthpop hooks. The title track “Blue Dream Lover” is a floating, smooth journey across the great flowing seas of intimacy. Seamlessly followed by the thumping rhythm of “Till I’m Gone”, the listener will unavoidably start to move. “The Great Escape” is next on the journey and will have you holding yourself back from pressing the repeat button on your stereo. When you slide into the penultimate track “The Melt” you’ll be thankful you restrained yourself, for this searing tribute to the passion of love won’t leave your head for days. Finally, the driving force behind “Soldier”, an ode to the fallen, and an examination of the futility of war, won’t just get you singing, it’ll get you thinking. Powerful, deep, and passionate, this is the kind of stuff that could have only come from the bedroom studios of these four Gold Coast locals. “Blue Dream Lover” has It’s release on the 7th of August at Elsewhere in Surfers Paradise. ELKE will be performing songs from the EP and many more, with the support of BMX DJ’s and Elsewhere mainstay, AUDUN. This is sure to be a night to remember.
