Fifth time's a charm
The fifth release from Brisbane roots larrikin, Asa Broomhall,
builds on his impressive body of work while managing to venture into a sound
that is more akin to his live shows. Recorded over five days at a Sunshine
Coast farmhouse that Broomhall grew up in, Revelry Road has all the hallmarks
of a raw roots recording – intimate vocals, clanging guitars and foot-stomping
rhythms. Seamlessly moving between intimate acoustic tracks and full band
hoe-downs, Broomhall captures the spirit of a live performance while managing
to maintain note-perfect musicianship. While Broomhall’s songwriting isn’t
overly complex, it is familiar enough to be inviting and it doesn’t simply rely
on the 12-bar format that can plague the writing of other blues artists.
Broomhall seems to have figured out what he wants in an album and how to go
about getting it once he is in the studio ... or the farmhouse.
