(Eleven Seven/EMI)
Yup, it’s another Jet album
Jet’s swift transition from international
rocks stars to international butt of jokes can be traced between their
fame-making iPod ad and Pitchfork reviewing their sophomore album, Shine On, by
posting a video of a chimpanzee urinating in its own mouth. Jet are thus in the
unenviable position of being mightily successful but not at all respected, which
is a sure-fire way to receive catty reviews and the cold shoulder from the
public at large. So here’s Shaka Rock, their third album, which opens with a
predictable blast of rock bombast: K.I.A. (Killed In Action), which channels
U2’s Vertigo just as much as it does the more obvious of Jet’s reference
points. It’s clear that Jet are up to something a little different on this
album: Beat On Repeat might be a misguided Clash homage before it slips into
the expected Stones-lite routine; Seventeen has a piano line that could have
come out of Foreigner or Supertramp; Walk has some of the cheeky charm that
made Supergrass. But the fact that it’s so easy to pick out elements of any
given song on Shaka Rock and point to another band that has informed that sound
indicates this album’s weakness: the influences here are both too obvious and
don’t run deep enough. Underneath the studio-added bells and whistles Jet are
still plying their bizarre trade of making nostalgic rock music for people who
aren’t especially interested in rock music history.

CHAD PARKHILL
1. Written by Tony, on 10-08-2009 08:36 Why did you review this album when you clearly have a bias against the band to begin with? I'd be curious to think what someone who actually liked their previous material thinks of the new record. |
2. Written by Jed, on 12-08-2009 18:58 Well said Tony!! chad parkhill obviously has some sort of vendetta against the aussie rockers! they\'re not out there claiming to be the greatest rock n roll band of all time, they are just doin their thing and are fortunate enough to have had a decent amount of international success. Hey chad, maybe you\'re upset cos your below par band hasn\'t made it anywhere??? |
3. Written by Ming UK, on 14-08-2009 07:45 Jet are a great band. For me, someone who was not really into rock music at the time that some of their influences first appeared, I love the certain familiarity that is obvious in many of their songs. This is a credit to Jet. Having seen them a number of times live (new orleans / london x2 and Madrid) - they are a great live band - no fancy stage set or lighting - just a really great rock band. The second album was easily as good as the 1st (although it took a little longer to appreciate). Those who gave that album a chance will surely do the same for Shaka Rock. Good luck to Jet - they deserve it. |
4. Written by Bucketfoot, on 16-08-2009 12:42 I agree with the other guys...this reviewer shouldn't have bothered because he'd made up his mind before listening to the album...how about you try something different next time you review an album Chad and try being impartial like a real reviewer. |
5. Written by Duffy, on 20-08-2009 05:30 Agree with everything above. Did Chad actually get paid for this work? I can listen to every song I hear on the radio and look for an influence or a song it reminds me of. Get a grip and do your job properly. I'd rather you told me about how your weekend went as you have offered me little on the album I have been waiting too long for.Oh, and one of the best live acts I have ever seen. Duffy, Liverpool. |
6. Written by DAN, on 20-08-2009 10:45 I have Shaka Rock and love it! You're kidding yourself if you think this isn't any good... |
7. Written by Jace, on 21-08-2009 09:34 Agree with everyone, why is someone with a pre existing dislike for them reviewing the album? It would be like me reviewing Justin Timberlake or something. Personally I didnt mind Shine on. I have Shaka Rock and quite enjoy it, I dont know if its at quite the same level as Get Born but there are some great tracks on there. |
8. Written by Barney, on 23-08-2009 17:14 Ur just some cynical wuss with a crappy life, taking crap on a decent band... |
9. Written by Hannah-Louise, on 24-08-2009 00:44 Well said Jace. Surely somebody with an objective view of the band sould be writing a review Shaka Rock, not someone with pre-concieved views attempting cynicism and failing. Unlike you, I'm not bias; I've never listened to any of Jet's albums, but now I plan to, based on the comments posted to your shoddy excuse for a review. |
10. Written by beyondtool, on 25-08-2009 22:28 Why does everyone hate Jet so? Conceited as they may be they are without a doubt very talented song writers and incredible live performers. It didn't harm Oasis, and they certainly haven't penned as many hits as Jet IMHO. |
11. Written by Mike, on 08-09-2009 12:51 If it counts for anything, I'd tack on another two stars to your rating. 4.5/5 |
12. Written by Goldilocks, on 15-09-2009 17:15 holy crap, jet fans can (sort of) read? you learn something new every day. good for you, jet fans. |
13. Written by Jet Fan, on 15-09-2009 17:32 Cahd is a stupid. He is obviously bias becuz he doesnt liek this gr8 album. I have herd seventeen albums so I can say with othority that Jet r the best band eva. Chad go back to yr home were u r wuss if u in Liverpoole kick ur arse reviewer. I give Jet 6.5/5 |
14. Written by Duffy II, on 15-09-2009 18:04 Why didnt they give the album to a tru fan who wud then not b bias liek Chadd??? I LUV JET!! |
15. Written by Dan, on 15-09-2009 18:12 Jet Fan: WTF? I truly hope you were drunk or high when you wrote that because if that's how you actually think sentences are constructed then you've failed. At life. BTW, I own over 30 albums and listened to many, many more and I don't believe I'm an authority on music. I like Jet but Shaka Rock isn't their best. It's not as bad as the review says but definitely doesn't deserve more than 3/5. |
16. Written by HowlingEverett, on 15-09-2009 22:20 Last time I checked, reviewers ARE paid for their bias. A review is an opinion piece, kiddies. It's fine if you don't agree but don't act like a bad review is a disservice to some sort of ideal place rock bands live in. At least in this case the reviewer's given ample reason for his dislike. If he'd operated on the same level as the Jet fans here, the review would have consisted of the following: "God, Jet are so shit. They're just shit. 2 stars." Hmm, actually that sounds like a reasonable review to me :P Whoops! I'm biased! |
17. Written by donniedk, on 28-12-2009 11:16 jet are awesome. its good to see ozi rock bands out creating great music. the new album is kiss-ass! great work Jet! |
