Hello Yoko is a fairly new entrant upon Brisbane’s rather healthy indie/folk scene – how are you finding your contemporaries and companions?
Since Jaimee [Fryer] and I started playing shows we have met a lot of people in the industry who have been really helpful. Also I’m studying music at QUT and has been working closely there with a band called Cascadeer who have really helped us out in the folk scene.
Noting Angus & Julia Stone, Holly Throsby and Sarah Blasko, as influences – how do you create a sense of individuality to set yourself apart?
We have found that both of our personalities combined with the influence and inspiration of these artists bring a different and unique sound to our music.
How much of a part is Yoko Ono in the naming of the group?
Well in Grade 12, Jaimee did an artwork on John and Yoko and ever since then always joked about Yoko and we just nicknamed each other that. So I think the name just developed from that little inside joke (haha).
How did you know you could make music with Jaimee?
In school we used to play around on guitars and drums and thought about making a band but nothing ever developed out of that until we had left school and both realised we wanted to write folk music.
Do you each write separately, or is it more collaborative?
We usually write separately and then get together to work on the arrangement and other instrumentation.
What does the future hold for Hello Yoko?
Well, our plan for now is to get out an EP by the end of the year and do as many gigs as we can to get lots of experience. We would also like to support some of our favourite local bands.
HELLO YOKO play The Hive on Sunday Aug 26 alongside Dunsinane & The Dino Twins at 2pm. www.myspace.com/helloyoko
