In terms of influences like The Postal Service, Sigur Rós and Múm, what have you mainly drawn from these acts?
Some things we have taken from each of these bands: The Postal service, warmth and honesty of vocal; the fun that can be found in pop, Sigur Rós a flowing textures, epic beauty, the ability to make songs that are happy as well as sad, and Múm, beats, textures, and creativity of sound sources. There is no direct intention for us to really set ourselves apart from these bands, or replicate them. Like any band, we just take reference of the sounds we like and try to create a sound that is enjoyable for us first and foremost, and hopefully, when we play shows, make records there are other people that will have a similar enjoyment of what we have created.
Who creates the ‘flickering backdrop of sublimely animated projections’?
I run an animation studio during the day and spend time outside of that to create animations and interactive projections for our live set-up. The set-up is constantly evolving and has gone through many iterations, but as it stands, I've made custom animated projections for each song that react to the on stage performance, and act as our on stage lighting and hopefully enhance the live experience beyond just listening.
As it took four years to produce I Am Not A Bird, where do you see the band in the next four years?
We consider the direction of a band to be a constantly evolving, forever unfinished experiment. So in four years we'd hope that not only are we more professional and established, but our sound/visual identity has grown and progressed in a way that keeps the three of us, and any fans, of ours inspired by what we are creating. More directly, it took us about four years to create our first album, so we intend to get onto new songs for a new record straight away to continue this progression.
