Brisband compilation catalogues our alternative mainstream
Wasn’t it just recently that Brisbane was internationally ranked as one of the key emerging hotspots for new music around the globe? [No. The Billboard article, which is almost three years old now, listed Brisbane as one of the top five “unlikely” cities producing good music. It’s an encouragement award at best, which is fine, but the last thing the Brisbane music community needs is a collective sense of entitlement that outweighs our actual relevance – Indie Ed.] Well, the idea of the Brisbane Sounds Project is to prove that right, and provide a leg up in the process. The third in this series of albums taps once more into the vibrant musical currents that run through this city’s melodic heart with the aim of getting the rest of the world to take notice. The result is a solidly contemporary collection of 22 tracks, mapping the diversity of music on offer here. Some of the acts are in danger of becoming fixtures – Andrew Morris, Texas Tea, Vegas Kings and I Heart Hiroshima (who settled on a cover of Kiwi legends The Chills’ Pink Frost) are among those who’ve made it on both of the earlier releases. But no matter, they earn their spots with strong contributions, matched by the efforts of Mexico City, Mary Trembles, DZ ... the list of notables goes on. This is an album worthy of your patronage, not merely because it’s locals supporting locals but also because of that grander plan to get our music out there.
