The Sunshine State is set to host America’s hottest dance groups.
The all-male troupe, known as JabbaWockeeZ (JBWKZ), will perform at the Brisbane City Hall on Sunday 30 August. This Californian based group has experienced global success since winning the inaugural MTV America’s Best Dance Crew in 2008. With a resume boasting appearances in video clips, commercials and award shows, their popularity can be reflected in more than half a million followers on their Facebook page and nearly 30,000 Twits. JabbaWockeeZ, whose name was inspired by Lewis Carroll’s nonsense poem, “Jabberwocky”, have created a new language in the hip hop genre. They have brought a theatrical, artistic bent to this street-inspired dance. Known for their intricate, synchronization and precise moves, they use mime and kabuki-styled theatrics in their signature routines. They call their self-named dance style Beat Kune Do, named after the Bruce Lee-created martial arts style Jeet Kune Do. The ten-man group, formed in 2003 by members Joe Larot, Kevin Brewer and Phil Tayag, started out performing at local events in San Diego and Los Angeles. Their first televised appearance was during the second season of America's Got Talent in 2007. JBWKZ are the feature act in a smorgasbord of dance and musical talent.
