Another 10 iconic Australian songs and recordings have been added to the National Film & Sound Archive’s Sounds Of Australia registry. The recent additions include the Happy Little Vegemites jingle, Yothu Yindi’s Treaty and Dorothea Mackellar’s reading of her poem My Country. The registry was launched in 2007 with an initial 10 songs. Each year the public is invited to put forward their suggestions for possible inclusion on the registry and a 21-member panel narrows the list down to just 10 songs. This year, the panel came up with a list that reflects the “breadth and depth of Australia’s concerns and passions”. The registry aims to preserve these iconic sounds for later generations. For the full list of inclusions and to nominate a song or recording for 2010, head to www.nfsa.gov.au/whats_on/soundsofaustralia
