  • It’s all over for energetic, Triple J Unearthed winners (2006) Young & Restless. The band stated last Monday that “Through relocating interstate, line-up changes, touring and recording we have all had our share of amazing times, but in the last few weeks it has become clear that this is the end of the road for our band.” Their final show was in Melbourne last Friday.
  • Fortunately, Triple J continues to unearth talent with this year’s winner of Unearthed High announced. Howl from Ballarat High (VIC) have won the opportunity to record in the Triple J studios, score airplay and get the recognition of being Australia’s best high school band. Pretty sweet.
  • Townsville is hosting the inaugural Full Noise Music Festival on Oct 24 and organisers are looking for Queensland bands and artists to support the already sterling line-up, including Empire Of The Sun, Frenzal Rhomb and British India. Interested parties should email . Head to www.fullnoisefestival.com.au for more details.
  • Speaking of costume store explosion survivors Empire Of The Sun, EMI are releasing a dedicated iPhone app game featuring the band. We expect it be as memorable as other games featuring briefly popular musical acts, including Frankie Goes To Hollywood for the Commodore 64, or Thompson Twins Adventure for the ZX Spectrum. I.E. not at all.
  • But wait, there’s more! Empire frontman Luke Steele will be gracing Jay-Z’s upcoming album Blueprint 3. He guests on the record’s opening track, What We Talkin’ About. 99 problems, but the Australian ain’t one!
  • As a tribute to Alice In Chains’ late frontman Layne Staley, the band have gotten together with Elton John on their the title track of their upcoming album Black Gives Way To Blue. The album comes out in Sep 25. Does this mean Staley is as culturally significant as Princess Di?
  • Portishead’s Geoff Barrow – co-owner of Invada Records with Katalyst – has a new three-piece act, entitled Beak>. Unlike Portishead, who have only released three albums in 15 years, Barrow was determined to work faster with Beak>, recording their self-titled debut in just 12 days. Expect to see the album in October on Invada.
  • Tour time: Delightful Scots indie types Camera Obscura have a date at The Zoo on Jan 22, 2010, listed on their MySpace. No official word as yet.
  • U2 will be here in 2011; so the band’s stage designer Mark Fisher told the Sunday Herald Sun. Fisher also revealed that they will leave the gigantic stage of its current 360 world tour in an Australian city to remain as a permanent concert pavilion.
