The squalid air inside The Hi-Fi is rife, practically overwhelmed with anticipation: how often can you see something genuinely unique in Brisbane? For those in attendance, you can add Los Angeles-based hardcore punks playing Mariachi music to the miniscule list. Alter egos of the headliners dressed in traditional costumes, El Bronx capture the attention of the crowd with their sombre love songs and Spanish flair. Expecting a blustery and awkward performance, it was amazing to see the vitality they bring to the music, particularly Brad Megers’ commanding trumpet fills. Local three-piece Numbers Radio aren’t exactly in an enviable position, being bookended by the main event band, but it doesn’t phase them in the slightest; the band sound practically watertight. It’s hard rock amped up by a heavy bass-driven sound, the double vocals and shouts of Dave Orr and Robbie Carlyon adding to the intensity. After much roadie pacing and ambient sound, The Bronx burst out of the gates with Heart Attack American, coaxing the crowd to chant There is no revolution…I think it’s a love song. From there it’s one caterwaul after another of fire and rage, living up to their sparkling live reputation. Matt Caughthran is caught between howling like a caged animal and smiling like a buffoon. I also believe that’s the general vibe of the crowd as the curtains close and we all shuffle home.
