ImageMILES MAYO, front man of SPECIAL PATROL, who are not actually related to the similarly named hamster from The Young Ones, talks to JODY MACGREGOR.

JODY MACGREGOR: Where did you find the kids who sing along in your single, Right On?

MILES MAYO: The kids in that recording were music students of our cello, piano, BV player Briohny [Campbell]. Originally the band was singing that part until Bri came up with the idea to use the kids instead. After that we decided to use the kids for all sorts of things. They are currently putting together Nike sneakers for us to sell on the streets. Ha, kids, they’re so easily influenced.

JM: What are you listening to at the moment?

MM: I have Bill Withers in the player quite a lot recently. I have also been listening to Elton John, The Rolling Stones, M. Ward and Johnny Cash. Something more modern that I’ve been listening to is Kevin Bloody Wilson – an older Australian artist.

JM: You just performed with The Whitlams; what was that like?

MM: Those shows were heaps of fun. We have played with them quite a bit in the past few years but I think the most recent shows were the best ones we’ve done with them. I think it might be because we are playing at our best at the moment and the crowd seemed to really feed off it. Also, when we play in Adelaide at the moment we have been adding two girls on back up vocals to fill the sound out and add to that corny sing-along vibe. It’s a lot of fun playing live at the moment.

JM: What’s the perfect way to listen to Special Patrol?

MM: Maybe in the car on a road trip. I like music that goes well with travel and I reckon we fall into that category. It also lends itself to lovemaking and ironing. I think our live show is a lot of fun these days as well.

JM: What lessons should listeners take away with them from your music?

MM: If you play along to it on guitar it will teach you to play those songs on guitar. Hopefully there are no preachy lesson-teaching messages in the songs.

SPECIAL PATROL play X&Y Bar on Saturday Oct 10.
