The Outpost, Blonde Venus and The Zooare putting on a free event to celebrate the 100th year of Fred Perry, the 1909 three-time Wimbledon champion who inspired the sportswear label beloved by Mods, Skins and Brit-poppers. On Thursday Oct 22, The Zoo’s driveway will become the site of a Wimbledon-themed Table Tennis comp, with tunes provided by DJ Schleke (Boss Sounds), while upstairs Comic Sans, Last Dinosaurs and some “very special guests” will play live, with accompanying Britpop tunes from Common People’s DJ Polar Bear.
- Punkers MouthGuard have returned from Europe with newly pressed copies of a six-song split release with Belgian band The Agitators on 10-inch green vinyl. Pick up a copy when the ‘Guard play Friday Oct 23 at the Greenslopes Bowls Club and Saturday Oct 24 at The Jubilee Hotel.
- Three years in the making, Trash McSweeney has apparently completed the mix on The Red Paintings’ appropriately named debut album The Revolution Is Never Coming. Flying back from LA for the only Brisbane show this year, Trash rejoins his bandmates to support Poison The Well on Saturday Oct 24 at The Hi-Fi. Fans should keep their fingers crossed for the album soon.
- Sydney singer-songwriters Elana Stone and Brian Campeau are travelling with the UK’s Passenger for an east coast tour, taking in a mix of dates. Passenger will play the Valley Fiesta Oct 23-25, while Stone and Campeau play Brisbane Powerhouse’s Live Spark on Sunday Nov 1. The three acts then join forces for a show at The Troubadour on Tuesday Nov 3, joined by guest Jess Chalker.
- Local indie rockers Wind&Brackets are gearing up to launch a new Magoo-produced EP at The Club House on Saturday Oct 24 during the Valley Fiesta madness. They’ll be accompanied by Velociraptor for what is certain to be a wild time in that corner of the Valley.
- Oz hip hoppers Scripted Dialects will launch their debut EP Just Pressed Record at Funk’n Soul’d Out at The Globe on Sunday Oct 25, alongside Truth Serum, Bessy-Lou and Mad Occupants.
- Japan’s crazy pop-types LIMITED EXPRESS (HAS GONE?) are Australia-bound once again, this time set to grace stages Oct 23-25 as part of Valley Fiesta. Companion band Ni-Hao! (also featuring Yukari of LIMITED EXPRESS) are coming along for the ride. Good times.
- Reggae ahoy! Bob Marley’s Original Wailers are bound for our parts on their Movement Of The People Tour, pulling into Byron’s Beach Hotel on Monday Nov 23 and The Hi-Fi on Wednesday Nov 25. Tickets are on sale now from www.oztix.com.au and www.thehifi.com.au.
