Club 299 - Sun Oct 25
It’s a travesty that the first ever Australian tour of German punk/alternative legends Spermbirds lands in Brisbane on a Sunday night with doors at 6pm, but tonight’s line-up is compensation enough for this oversight. Opening up, indie noise punk act To The North kick things off with restrained guitar twangs and vocals equal parts sweetness and torment. With an energy level reflective of the crowd’s excitement over tonight’s bill, local crossover disciples Team Dickhead shred in the name of thrash. Victorian thrash four piece Scratch N Sniff are excellent. If you’re into sloppy Japanese grindcore and raw-as-shit live sets, you’ll agree. In main support, Mid Youth Crisis bring their own impressive back catalogue to 299’s corner stage. Scaling back on the aggression, MYC play a set worth of melodic skate punk, with conviction and passion that transports the crowd back to 1997, if only for a short while. It took Spermbirds over 25 years to get to Brisbane, and when the German five-piece land on the stage, the applause is reflective of this fact. What follows is amazing, hearing seminal cuts like Something To Prove for the first time live is an experience tonight’s crowd will not forget.
