The Powerhouse - Wed Oct 28
Perhaps because tonight’s performance is also being recorded, The Powerhouse’s Visy Theatre is wrapped in hushed silence as Brisbane’s favourite modern jazz trio Misinterprotato unveil their magic before the seated audience. Opening with a characteristically busy composition, pianist/leader Sean Foran, double bassist Pat Marchisella and drummer John Parker get joined by the special guest – Norway’s Frøy Aagre – on saxophone and a gloriously tuneful piece called Sick follows. Clad in a red dress, the rising jazz star gives off a very Lisa Simpson-ish vibe as she delivers her velvety, melody-soaked lines; the interplay between the four musicians is so organic one could think the three Aussies and the Norwegian have been jamming for years. Aagre’s style carries a distinctly “less-is-more” Miles Davis approach, creating a nice contrast with Misinterprotato’s astounding skills – Marchisella in particular is a wizard of his instrument, taking it where it has never walked with an array of fifth chords, blindingly rapid solos, loops, bowed lines and distorted riffs (distortion on a double bass! Avant-garde!), while Foran’s lyrical solos and Parker’s brushed polyrhythmic patterns invite us to leave the planet several times throughout. A bluesy Chase and Aagre’s beautiful, as-yet untitled new theme get aired before the aptly-titled Cute (replete with an eye-popping double bass workout) and the brand-new Norwegian Rain Goddess conclude the unforgettable night.
