The Troubadour - Sun Nov 15
Most likely as a consequence of a massive Brisbane live music weekend, The Troub is very sparsely populated tonight, which doesn’t however seem to discourage the opening act – Melbourne’s Potential Falcon – from going about their Crazy Horse-influenced business. The Napoleon Dynamite-alike lead guitarist gleefully jumping about, songs like Valentine’s Day (cheerfully referred to as "crygasm"), When I’m Old and a hooky new ditty cover our ears in triple-guitar sonic cream. Coming all they way from LA, indie-rock classicists Eulogies are similarly unperturbed by the lacking crowd. Hat-sporting frontman Peter Walker leads the charge on the crunchy power-pop numbers while his bandmates periodically indulge in maraca-shaking; Under The Knife’s reverberating guitar freakout and Triple J-checked Two Can Play (with the headliners’ keyboardist Steph stepping up to sing) are standouts, yet overall the four-piece could have done with a bit more cowbell, in Christopher Walken-speak.
An atmospheric synth intro announces the arrival of the exuberant Novocastrians The Seabellies, who invite us to roam the waters not yet reached by Dappled Cities with them. Singer Trent soars like Tim Derricourt on the iridescent new single Orange X, Paper Flames, Sleep Well, Transcending (where the instrument-swapping sextet magically summon a horn section among them) and Armour – all prime dollops of epic, tuneful indie-pop. The ocean in Newie does indeed breed some amazing marine life.
