Never known for playing by the rules, MIKE MUIR, vocalist of enigmatic hardcore band SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, remains defiant as he explains to Rave’s JAMES STAFFORD how he intends to launch the band anew from his adopted home right here in Queensland.
In an exciting coup for SEQ hardcore fans, veteran Californian thrash punk pioneers Suicidal Tendencies have announced an extremely limited run of shows in their “Pre-Invasion Tour”, with only three dates scheduled for the whole of Australia – in Byron Bay, Coolangatta and Caloundra. Vocalist Mike Muir describes the mini-tour as a cautious attempt at a new beginning.
“It’s either a new beginning or the end, you know. I’m looking at it as the beginning, so I’m real excited. We’re taking this very personal because we’re literally bringing ourselves here.”
Seeming a little nervous about the risky DIY venture, Muir admits that the tour is an experiment for the band, and only a teaser for the fans.
“The thing that we’re trying to do with this (tour), doing just three shows is not cost efficient, and actually doing them ourselves, is kind of a gamble.
“We’re coming here before the record is out, before we do the real tour because we want to play a lot of other places, but only if it makes sense.”
With an established network of tech-savvy fans, news of the tour has spread far and wide, and the excitement has filtered back to Muir, who is encouraged by the buzz.
“We’re fortunate that there are a lot of people coming up from Sydney, Melbourne and other places like that, who are going to all three shows and it’s turning into what we think is going to be a really good atmosphere.”
Now based with his family on the Sunshine Coast, Muir has also put together a compilation CD of new and unreleased material featuring the entire Suicidal Family roster, which you won’t find in music stores any time soon.
“Stuff that I got into did not go into the record stores or get played on the radio. I think that so many things get too marketed, you get into that situation, so let’s do the compilation and give people a little fill and just sell it at the shows. I think its better that way, people can feel like they have something, and you’re not trying to force it down their throat.”
Fans who caught Suicidal’s set at ‘07’s Soundwave will have experienced a similar incarnation of the band, featuring Dean Pleasants and Mike Clark on guitars and Steve Brunner on bass with only the one change, man-mountain Eric Moore from Infectious Grooves on drums.
Given his cautious approach, it is surprising to hear Muir detail a slew of exciting new releases planned for 2010.
“Starting next year, every month there’s going to be something released, starting with a live Suicidal DVD that we recorded at the Olympic Auditorium. Then Infectious Grooves, Cyco Miko, and a bunch of old projects that were never released.
“Infectious Grooves and Cyco Miko toured together in Europe 1995, when Robert Trujillo, now in Metallica, was in both Infectious and Suicidal. We recorded in France and we have a double live CD that’s actually way cool.”
While 2009 saw the Suicidal Family rebirth and rebuild, it seems that 2010 may truly be the year of the cyco.
SUICIDAL TENDENCIES play Byron’s Great Northern on Wednesday Dec 2, the Coolangatta Hotel on Friday Dec 4, and Caloundra’s King’s Beach tavern on Saturday Dec 5.
