Christmas presents – what a conundrum. Gift vouchers, socks and body wash, OR … you could consult the INFORMER CHRISTMAS GIFT GUIDE, compiled by some of Rave’s most gifted (ho ho) contributors. Because remember, no one under the age of 50 likes satin boxer shorts.

MASTER OF YOUR DOMAIN
DOMINION is an award-winning and innovative game about petty monarchs competing to impress their grandparents. Each player has a small, identical deck, but gains cards from shared piles representing buildings or useful people, each with different effects on play. Cycling through cards quickly, the decks that were identical become personalised as you focus on money, respect or sabotage. The massive, but astonishingly well-balanced, selection of cards makes it endlessly replayable. Sounds complicated, but is surprisingly intuitive.
DOMINION is available from Mind Games (www.mindgamesbrisbane.com) and online stores.

TIMELESS QUALITY
DIETER RAMS is a German industrial designer who is famous for his work with Braun; his iconic designs are minimalist classics and the work of Rams is currently being celebrated at London’s Design Museum. This Christmas, forget high tech gadgetry, fancy jewellery and charity goats (well maybe get those too) and stick with a classic. Via Alley, a Sydney based store, has a limited amount of classic Braun alarm clocks up on their website now. Ranging from $50 through to $86 the battery-operated timepieces were first designed in 1971. Still looking fresh close to forty years down the track, it’s pretty safe to assume this gift won’t look dated any time soon.
DIETER RAMS-designed BRAUN clocks are available from www.viaalley.com.

IT’S-A MARIO!
We all know that Christmas is about caring and sharing. But Christmas is also about playing Mario games. Christmas Day just doesn’t feel right if there isn’t a Mario title to bust out, and fortunately we’re covered this year by NEW SUPER MARIO BROS WII. Not only does it come in snazzy red, much like Santa himself, it can be played with four people, so that everyone – even your half-blind grandmother and lovably inebriated uncle – can join in the family fun.
NEW SUPER MARIO BROS WII is available at JB Hi-Fi (www.jbhifionline.com.au) for $79.

ALL I WANT FOR XMAS…
I have heard Santa’s elves prefer a Northern winter, and have been toiling away in London to produce some rather nifty opaque and sheer tights in similar pastel colours for HOUSE OF HOLLAND. It’s a perfect stocking stuffer to keep my legs warm and fancy come winter ($25).
Available now at Blonde Venus (www.blondevenus.com.au) and The Outpost.

THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON LIVING
Have you ever read Pride & Prejudice? Did you think it needed something a little more exciting than the rather dull Mr Bingley? Well author Seth Grahame-Smith and Quirk Classics (www.quirkclassics.com) thought so and have rewritten Jane Austen’s classic novel to now include an army of the undead – that’s right PRIDE & PREJUDICE & ZOMBIES.
Available now from Borders (www.borders.com.au), Angus & Robertson (www.angusrobertson.com.au) and other online stores. Also available from Quirk: Sense & Sensibility & Sea Monsters.

STITCHED WITH LOVE
Look at him. Have you fallen in love yet? What about now? Look at those eyes! You can’t buy eyes like that. Eyes that look like an owl but actually belong to a cat. A BROWN CHOCOLATE PLUSH CAT. Whoever you buy this for will love you, just like you’ll love him. In a cuddly, felty Brown Chocolate Plush Cat way. In the way that he could just chill out on your bed or on your couch and you can come home and say, ‘What’s up Brown Chocolate Plush Cat, how was your day?’ and he can just shrug a bit and tell you he took it easy. He won’t eat all your pudding either – or at least that’s what he says. Adopt him now.
BROWN CHOCOLATE PLUSH CAT is available at www.gush4plush.etsy.com.
