Another release from Neil Young’s Performance Series archives
In a move that wouldn’t happen too much in the era of instant internet leakage, prior to the release of his 1992 album Harvest Moon, Neil Young previewed all the songs before a live audience. A sole Young sings and plays guitar, banjo, harmonica and piano to emphasise the sparse, intimate feel of his then-upcoming record, a sequel of sorts to his ’70s smash Harvest. In a continuation of the excellent Performance Series archives, this CD showcases Young playing some his most haunting and tender songs before an adoring crowd. As convincing as he is in “grizzled rocker” mode, he’s arguably at his best when simply strumming guitar and crooning in that shaky, vulnerable voice. So, if you like troubadour Neil more than rock & roll Neil, this is the disc for you. Such A Woman sounds like a love song delivered by a ghost, while One Of These Days basically sets out the blueprint for modern Americana heroes like My Morning Jacket and Iron & Wine. And Harvest Moon’s title track is one of Young’s best slow dance romantic songs ever (“There’s a full moon rising, let’s go dancing in the light”). Another excellent entry in Young’s Performance Series.
