ImageAnyone a fan of Grand Designs? You’ll be interested in at least a small portion of this conversation between UK hotshot EDDIE HALLIWELL and SCOTT HARMS then.

It’s hard to know what to expect if you were to walk into the house of a famous DJ. Will it be gold-trimmed everything? Will there be the biggest glass coffee table with what looks to be sugar spilt all over it? Perhaps I’ll be tripping over random items strewn all over the floor from last night’s party?

"It’s pretty clean," Eddie Halliwell says, looking around his place. "I’ve not been in it too long."

Eddie bought his new pad off-the-plan and moved in early in the year. I mention to the former Radio 1 host that I’m a bit of a fan of those shows on Lifestyle, where couples design new builds – with varying degrees of success. "I’ve got quite a bit to do on it yet, so it’s clean and tidy. It could do with a little more furnishings," he laughs – it seems the constant touring has put his plan to furnish on the shelf, for now (super pun combo intended).

Rather than ask about his kitchen, I ask Eddie instead what he’s been cooking up in the DJ lab – as one of the most famous club DJs in the world not doing studio work, Eddie instead uses his incredible talent behind the decks to get him in the upper regions of DJ Mag’s yearly rankings, capturing the hearts and minds of clubbers who love to have it, to use one of Eddie’s famous Radio 1 catch phrases, ‘full fire’.

The concept Eddie has been debuted at a few select European festivals over the summer – including Creamfields – is called ED-IT. Basically, Eddie controls the sound and the visuals – chopping and changing both as he sees fit. Unsurprisingly, it’s more than a little complex, and still being trialled. "ED-IT is ultimately an exclusive platform for me to DJ from," he says. "We’ve invested in a stage show with pyrotechnics and visuals and make into a bigger gig."

"The [visual] tracks that we’ve got lined up to use, we’re sending MIDI signals to the visual program so then they just trigger certain different visuals," he says. "It took some setting up – getting your head around how to set up the platform so it works for you. And when we come around to playing the next set of gigs, it will evolve again."

Eddie tells me he hopes to roll out the ED-IT experience sometime in the new year – though it most likely will not be included in the upcoming Australian tour. Instead, he’ll have a fresh bag of tunes and his top-notch mixing skills ready. But will the crowd’s chants of ‘Eddie’ be met with an electro set, or his trademark ‘full fire’ trance guise?

"That all depends on the crowd I suppose. The way I play is always determined by the crowd you put in front – and what time you play in, also what DJs you play around – but if you give me the right time and the right crowd, I’ll certainly be giving it full fire!"

EDDIE HALLIWELL plays Summafieldayze 2010 at Gold Coast’s Doug Jennings Park on Saturday Jan 9 along with The Presets, Sebastien Leger, Evil Nine, The Shapeshifters and many more. www.eddiehalliwell.com / www.summadayze.com
