ImageHEIDI LEIGH AXTON talks to LEGENDS OF MOTORSPORT guitarist ADAM STOKES about the perils of wearing sunglasses indoors, and the band’s new album Yeah Uhuh.

If you happen to be at a Legends Of Motorsport gig and something in the heat of their music causes the joint to go up in flames … with the crowd scattering like cars at a drag race as you search for the nearest exit, do find it in your heart to give the boys a wake-up kick on your way out. According to Adam Stokes their code of dress means they may miss the vital warning signs. "We wear sunglasses a lot of the time, so I don’t tend to see much. I generally miss a lot of the antics, but I love the vibe when people really get into it. If a fire broke out though, I’d be having a Jazz moment and be fried to a crisp."

The guys from Legends Of Motorsport are, as the name suggests, rock-loving men with a passion for four wheeled tin cans. Visit their website and you’ll be confronted with a line of car-shaped navigation buttons that rev loudly when clicked. Whose idea was it to blend this keen interest with music? "That would be down to Jean Claude Vangelis and Richard Fyshwick; the two founding members. They’re petrolheads to the core. I’m afraid I don’t share that," laughs Adam. "But I think sonically, what we put out, is reminiscent of the rear end of a charger."

So what can he tell us about the band’s new album Yeah Uhuh? "Yeah Uhuh is a freed-up, nasty, Legends Of Motorsport rock & roll record. Our plan was to go to a few different studios and get some good sounds going on, concentrate on the songs and keep it really raw." Is it better than previous LM records? "Very much so yeah. I think it’s the best sounding thing I’ve ever done. The songs are really branching out. Our sound is pretty much set in stone now too, so we can start playing with things and tinkering. Also I guess we got Hertze Van Rental in on drums during the making of this album and that’s energized it a bit."

Legends will be touring in January and fans can only hope they have a good GPS and an up-to-date address book with them. As Adam explains, they have had their hiccups in the past. "When we toured New Zealand, we got there and drove ten hours from Auckland down to Wellington, which wasn’t the greatest planning," he reflects with amusement. "We got to Wellington and then realized we didn’t have the address of the guy’s place that we were meant to be staying at that night. We had a number for him, but it had one too many digits, so we were just driving around Wellington in the wee hours and calling random phone numbers trying to see if we could come up with the right one. Fortunately, we did end up finally finding the place and had this beautiful frenetic party afterwards."

LEGENDS OF MOTORSPORT play The Step Inn on Saturday Jan 9 as part of the Some Rock And Roll Tour, with Hits and Giants Of Science. Their new album, YEAH UHUH, is out now through Plus One Records. www.myspace.com/legendsofmotorsport
