A memory of compilations past…
Compilation CDs are becoming a thing of the past as the world of digital media booms beyond belief. Slowly disappearing are the days when a compilation heralded an unreleased song or two by your favourite artists and a fistful of new bands and songs to wet your whistle on, prompting further musical exploration. The Soundwave 2010 CD happily stays true to the aforementioned model. With the festival line-up itself boasting a plethora of groups from across many genres, this release has a few tracks for fans of punk, hardcore, metal and rock, and also exposes the listener to a variety of bands they may otherwise have not bothered to check out due to the hideous, genre-splintered beast that music has become. With songs from Jane’s Addiction and Faith No More, Alexisonfire and Set Your Goals, Baroness and Trivium, The Get Up Kids and The Weakerthans, all the bases and everything in between are well covered indeed. The only downside to this compilation is once again the fault of digital media, with a number of tracks being freely available online (which somewhat tarnishes the excitement and may provoke excessive use of the skip button). Nonetheless, it’s pleasant to get a physical compilation able to survive hard drive failure, so this is easily overlooked.
