Sydney act The Jezabels certainly don’t lack ambition on their new EP She’s So Hard. The title track opens this collection of five tunes with a haunting piano melody that continues throughout the song like an ever-present spectre, while galloping drums and Hayley Mary’s soaring vocals help the song reach “towering epic” status. The rest of the tunes aren’t quite as giddily exciting as the opener, but further highlights are to be found nonetheless. Easy To Love has some of the title track’s building, rising drama but without the intriguing spookiness. The ‘60s-girl-group-from-hell dynamics of Violent Dream are more interesting, like a collision of The Crystals and early Throwing Muses. Into The Ink is an atmospheric journey with echoing, chiming guitars before finale The Man Is Dead fares us well with more trademark piano/drum collisions and Hayley’s emotion-wracked voice.
