Bigger than big
Gold Coast singer/songwriter Lincoln Hillard is apparently six-foot-five-inches tall, so he can call himself Bigfella as much as he wants. He’s an acoustic-guitar-toting surfer dude, so it’s a surprising that the first track of his EP, She Wants Soul, is catchy industrial angst-rock that sounds like it could have come from the likes of Gravity Kills or Stabbing Westward. The acoustic guitar does get busted out for the bluesy Smoke, but there’s plenty of grungy electric scuzz to go with it and the strings and cicadas in As I Go are both nice touches. The only song that sounds like the photos in his liner notes look is the final track, Stay. It’s gentle, middle-of-the-road adult contemporary that Bryan Adams wouldn’t be ashamed of with lines like, “Can you hear my whispers through your dreamscape world?” The songs that defy expectations are definitely Bigfellalinc’s best.
