Get some action from the string section

Having played violin since age four, Brisbane-raised San Francisco adoptee Savannah Jo Lack knows her way around the string section – her Golden Fiddle award, as well as the litany of artists she has played with, arranged and composed for throughout Australia and the US, is testament to that fact. After two albums with instrumental group Trinkets, Lack released her debut solo LP. On its face, a summery folk-pop record built on a husky feminine voice, with violin supplanting the traditional acoustic folk guitar, Knitting Songs’ distinctiveness lies in the accomplished musicianship behind it. Flowing string arrangements coloured with brass and keyboard blend back-porch folk-pop sensibility with classical pizzicato, shades of Norah Jones and tinges of roots music. Some songs reveal the discrepancy between Lack’s ability as a composer and a lyricist, but such differences are only possible because of the high standard set by her role as the former.
