RAVE spends five minutes with bright star on Brisbane’s alt-folk and country horizon, SUE RAY.
Dan Sultan seems to be going gangbusters at the moment – how did the opportunity to play with him come up?
Yes, he’s really doing well at the moment and I’m so excited to be playing with him. I wish I could say that Dan and I are old friends from way back, because I think he is really amazing, but it was a booking agent who approached me. I’m not sure but I think either Dan or somebody in his management may have heard one of my songs on a recently released compilation album and it went from there.
You’ve been gigging steadily around Brisbane in recent months, what have you learnt from your time around ‘the traps’?
How to drink strong coffee and how to manage my time better. It’s hard to make a living from this industry at times so I also have a day job. However, even though I can get so tired from gigging and working so much, it’s still fun and so rewarding to be able to perform and do something that I’m passionate about. I think I’m really lucky. Oh, and texting your friends repeatedly before a gig, does not guarantee their attendance.
Brisbane seems a fertile ground for alt-folkies of the country vein, and you’ve previously worked with The Gin Club on their Junk release. How have you found the camaraderie amongst your peers?
Because I’ve lived and performed in Brisbane for over 10 years I feel like I’ve grown up with many of the people involved in that scene. We may not see each other often, but because we’ve all been doing it together for so long, it somehow feels like we’re all distant relatives and gigs are our family reunions. Generally we all admire and support each other, and I’d like to think we are all proud of each others achievements.
What leading ladies of music do you admire?
Patsy Cline is up there, also Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, and Patty Griffin. And I recently discovered a duo called First Aid Kit which I’m pretty crazy about.
It’s been a few years since Best Beware, what’s in the pipeline for 2010?
Well I released Best Beware in 2008 and I’ve basically been busy touring and promoting it since then. I took a little break early last year from music, just so I could miss it again, and somehow ended up writing more songs in that time than I have in years. I am currently trying to decide which songs to record and aim to have a new album released late this year or early next year.
