PAUL VOGE, guitarist of WE SET SAIL, Rave’s Outburst! columnist and co-owner of independent punk/hardcore/indie record store Kill The Music is not a beach bunny. Neither is Rave’s JODY MACGREGOR.
JODY MACGREGOR: You’ve probably been to your share of shows at The Zoo over the years. Any highlights?
PAUL VOGE: I remember seeing Paul Dempsey (Something For Kate) there for just $9, he charges $44 now ... crazy. The best thing I think anyone ever saw at The Zoo was Jimmy Eat World supported by Blueline Medic, you cannot beat that shit! I dare you to better that show!
JM: What inspired you to use that great quote from Devil’s Advocate in
There Is No Way I’m Lifting An Anchor…?
PV: I have always been a fan of movie samples mixed with music, and we are all movie experts – yes, I said experts. We had a heap of samples we were working with, but Al Pacino’s voice just fitted so well in the song so we had to use it.
JM: Why the nautical theme?
PV: We don’t really have a nautical theme, well, we didn’t plan it that way. The band name came after the songs. I guess the songs we have are very open to interpretation. They may seem nautical in nature but have absolutely nothing to do with it ... as confusing as that sounds. I hate the beach and would most likely vomit if on a boat.
JM: Tell me about the formation of We Set Sail.
PV: I was in The Paper And The Plane and we shared a practice room with a band called Carrs Park. The guys in that band had a new thing going on and I was keen to try something else so I made them have a third guitarist so I could join, hahaha. Once I left TP&TP we started to take things a little bit more seriously and we have not killed each other yet!
JM: How do you juggle being a musician with running a shop?
PV: It can be hard at times, I sometimes see my wife only for our half-hour drive to work in the morning, which sucks, but I really enjoy this band so I make it work. If I hated it I would bail out, I am over people being in a band just for the sake being able to say “I’m in a band”... fuck that!
WE SET SAIL support The Paper And The Plane at The Zoo on Wednesday Feb 24 along with The Hazards Of Swimming Naked. See www.myspace.com/wesetsailband for more info.
