The Zoo - Sat Feb 13

A sold-out, stinking-hot Zoo greets tonight’s array of b-boys and b-girls who mesh harmoniously with less swaggering, but equally keen roots fans. Though hit track Another Day In The Life has some pleasant harmonies and a thumping beat, the Coalition Crew’s performance feels somewhat dull and recycled – and I can’t help but feel that Aussie hip hop in general is becoming slightly reprocessed after a decade in the limelight. Nevertheless, the roots of Ash Grunwald soon has the crowd whooping and clapping, and his heavy riffs and frenetic guitar strumming are something to behold. Tracks of note include Got My Mojo Working and Just Be Yourself. As hip hop crew Funkoars bound around on stage, it dawns on me that the locally remodeled brand of hip hop is far from dead – tracks The Hangover and Do It Together are standouts – and the crowd heaves like a single sweat-producing organism. For the grand finale, Aussie hip hop and roots combine in the form of Ash Grunwald & Funkoars for the last time in the foreseeable future. Hit single Little Did I Know is easily the most well-received, and around midnight a saturated, satisfied crowd funnels down The Zoo steps into (slightly) cooler outside air.

There should be a lot more of aussie hip hop in festivals as they would have a better influnce on younger kids that rely on the american bullshit ganster crap i say keep it local and we need to get the this american mentality out more aussie in as we can relate to the issues that these artists promote and hip hop is far from dead specily with funkoars ,muph ,bliss & esso ,pez ,pegz ,bias b , 360 , hilltops ,coalition crew , butterfingers , urth boy , drapht , downside ,sbx crew , obese , gully platoon , chasm , the tounge , tzu and there a lot more we need to get these names out there for every one to hear and see how much talent is in aussie hip hop and the msg they put across
