London correspondent JAKEB SMITH talks to BOBBY BASS EWING from Hungarian dancecore duo USA KINGS.
There’s something about a pompous musical alias that is strangely appealing. Which is why I love USA Kings. It couples the misplaced pride of a faltering superpower, with the regal totalitarianism of a hereditary monarch. Not to mention the inherent irony that no US citizen is allowed to hold a title.
USA Kings themselves are a fictional ‘90s electronic super group, though they actually formed in Budapest circa 2007. Bobby Bass Ewing and Rapper G typically take Eurodance tracks, speed them up to around 200-300 BPM and cut them with technical breaks. People in-the-know are calling this dancecore, I’m simply calling it: party times.
JAKEB SMITH: Are you guys looking forward to partying in the Australian Summer?
BOBBY BASS EWING: Absolutely, this will be the first show in Australia, so no question, we have to rock the house!
JS: Are your songs written around an initial concept, or do your sample banks inspire each composition?
BBE: Good question, sometimes we just got a feeling or maybe a classy Eurodance song or just a couple of drinks :)
JS: What do you look for in a good sample?
BBE: It has to have a really cool ‘90s vibe, that’s what we prefer.
JS: What was the crowd reaction like at Glastonbury last year? I get the impression that festival is off-the-hook.
BBE: That festival was total awesomeness! There were some problems like, we’ve missed the flight, problems with our equipment, but everything went all right in the end. We played on the last night and lot of people came to see the Trash City tent where we were.
JS: You’re credited with starting dancecore, did you coin the term, or simply adopt it?
BBE: We’ve started tag our music ‘dancecore’, but our best dancecore mate Annoying Ringtone was working on something similar and he used the dancecore expression, but our dancecore name was based on a festival, called Total Dance. This festival used to be a huge Eurodance event in Budapest, Hungary in the ‘90s and since we love remixing those songs in hardcore, breakcore style, we had just put those names together and voilà, you got total dancecore.
USA KINGS party like there’s no tomorrow at The Step Inn, Friday Feb 26, supported by Sweet Dreams, Potato Masta, Loose Grip, Andy Expandy and DJs. You should really check them out. www.myspace.com/theusakings
