Beyond mere coincidence, this is the second night in a row where I’ve noticed a higher-than-average showing of Brian Jonestown Massacre t-shirts in the growing crowd. No judgement, just general musings and two questions come to mind: one, you’re aware that BJM are playing Thursday night, yes? And two, if you’re wearing the shirt tonight, what are you going to wear then? Such concerns do not trouble local young guns Hungary Kids Of Hungary, whose sparkling bright pop makes an instant connection with the crowd. Provided you don’t get hit by an incoming Frisbee from lead vocalists Dean and Kane, you’re likely to have a great start to the night.
If they are forever to be known as ‘that treadmill video band’, could there at least be an amendment allowing OK Go to be recognized as ‘that treadmill video band …who know how to put on one helluva good rock show’? If the video screen alternating between animations and close-ups on each bandmember doesn’t tickle your fancy, then perhaps the confetti rain will do the job? Or the cosmic funk of their new album? What about the reimagined What To Do, adorned only in churchbells and harmonies performed by the band? No good? Well then I guess there’s just no pleasing some people.
